Enduring roots: John Weber coaching tree spreads across Southwest Florida football
Oct 25, 2018This one may be more sprawling vine – fitting for Southwest Florida – given its many branches from one hearty, enduring root: John Weber. “Oh my God,” the retired former Immokalee, Cypress Lake and Riverdale football coach said of those who have played or coached for him and are now coaches themselves, mostly in Southwest Florida. “Let me see. I’m trying to think,” the 74-year-old said before concluding, “I’m very fortunate.” FHSAA standings: Charlotte-Fort Myers could meet in playoff epic; Barron, Naples, Golden Gate, Gulf Coast all alive While Southwest Florida has its coaching pillars past and present – the late Sam Sirianni and his son at Fort Myers and Bill Kramer at Naples high on the list – Weber’s impact also continues to be widely felt a decade since he last patrolled the sideline. Five head coaches, at least three assistants, and multiple administrators and others who played or coached for Weber are in the game in some fashion in Southwest Florida. Charting a path just those coaches have taken leaves few area schools unmapped. From north to south, the list is impressive: Mariner, North Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Riverdale, LaBelle, East Lee County, Fort Myers, Dunbar, South Fort Myers, Cypress Lake, Bishop Verot, Estero, Community School of Naples, St. John Neumann, Lely and of course Immokalee. There’s probably others.
